Timber poles, commonly used for telecommunications purposes, will soon be required under a new harmonised European Standard to demonstrate their bending strength capabilities on an on-going basis.
Major users, such as telecoms companies, can also require suppliers to demonstrate strength, particularly at the start of a contract.
TRADA Technology provides the only dedicated EN 12509 timber pole strength testing facility in the UK for this purpose.
In conjunction with this test method we can:
- calculate characteristic values in accordance with EN 12511
- assess strength grading criteria eg knots in accordance with EN 12510
- measure sizes in accordance with EN 12479
We have been involved in the development and assessment of techniques to assess the remaining strength of poles in service, with or without decay, helping timber pole owners to develop the most cost efficient replacement programmes.
In the event of problems or failures with poles in service our technical experts are able to assess the condition, extent of decay and mode of failure. We can also provide expert reports in litigation cases.
BM TRADA (TRADA Technology's sister company) operates a Q-Mark product certification scheme for timber poles and is a Notified Body for CE Marking purposes.
Where certified products are made or installed by a member of TRADA, their details are listed in the suppliers directory.
