As with all building materials that provide a structural capability it is essential that performance characteristics are quantified. In some cases appropriate standards exist, but because of the innovative nature of this sector, new products are always being developed for which existing guidance may be lacking or inappropriate.
We can provide independent testing and appraisal to categorise the performance of these products. Where current standards are insufficient we will go back to first principles and conduct an appraisal using generally accepted test methods and appraisal methodologies.
Our rigorous technical appraisals review and establish the following:
- behaviour in relation to moisture
- durability
- structural performance
- fire performance
- practicability
- history of use
When assessing any product in this way we always take into account all existing qualification and quality control data.
If necessary, we will undertake a series of verification tests to either:
- determine product performance; or
- verify existing data.
We use new or verified test data and existing design information to calculate permissible stresses and moduli appropriate for use with UK structural design code BS 5268. We can also derive characteristic values for use with Eurocode design procedures.
BM TRADA Certification, in addition, manages Q-Mark product certification schemes and CE marking for engineered wood products.
Where certified products are made or installed by a member of TRADA, their details are listed in the suppliers directory.
