Wood for good’s ‘Open University’ wins information award

Wood for good's Online Learning programme has won this year's TRADA-sponsored
Best Technical Information Award within industry magazine TTJ's annual Awards initiative. The judges likened the programme to a ‘Timber Open University', a comment which also found favour with the guest speaker.
The winner was announced on 18th September at the prestigious Park Lane Hotel in London by the Rt Hon Charles Kennedy MP and the Award presented to wfg Director Charles Trevor.
TRADA Chief Executive Andrew Abbott said, ‘We were very pleased with the entries submitted for the Award and the overall quality was once again high. Two entries in particular stood out markedly from the rest, however, and consequently the judges decided that only these two should be shortlisted.'
Jostling for position with wood for good was window manufacturer NorDan, which entered its Academic Brochure. This offers an ‘authoritative and impartial overview', says the company, of the environmental and economic issues involved in window fabrication. Mr Abbott added, ‘The judges particularly liked the way the brochure tackled difficult issues such as climate change, putting across some complex messages and creating a bridge to what is a familiar product in the construction industry.'
The Online Learning programme from wfg had the edge, however. It allows architects and professionals 24-hour access to technical and practical information about wood and wood products, including the latest information on issues such as certification and climate change. ‘The judges felt this entry showed good ambition and was a great new form of flexible learning,' said Mr Abbott. ‘The resource can readily be expanded and updated as new information becomes available, and it is equally of interest to contractors, consultants and trainees in the timber industry. The use of web-based tools was considered wholly appropriate for the intended purpose.'
NorDan was equally commended for providing appropriate and accessible information. ‘In their words, the Academic Brochure elevates the product technically, providing specifiers with answers to the many questions they may have regarding window design, manufacture and performance.'
On behalf of wood for good Charles Trevor said, ‘We are thrilled to receive this recognition of our investment in training for the industry. Now more than ever the industry needs to ensure that it has access to the best possible quality of training. We hope to be adding new modules in 2009 to make the online resource even more commercially relevant.'
