TRADA marks anniversary with £75K research competition

Launching a year of celebrations to mark its 75th anniversary in 2009, at its AGM earlier this month TRADA announced a research competition for both Corporate and Professional members. Three or more winners will share research funding of up to £75,000.

The prize money has been set aside from the 2009 Research Budget to help fund projects that members want to undertake, not only for their own commercial benefit, but also to further the use of timber and wood products. The winners will be announced at the Chairman's dinner on 5th December 2008.

Chief Executive Andrew Abbott said, ‘Research is essential for companies wishing to retain a long-term competitive advantage in an increasingly challenging market. Research is also vital to underpin and expand the markets for timber. R&D budgets will inevitably come under considerable pressure in the current economic climate, but we would encourage members to view research as an investment in their future well-being, not as an overhead to be pruned or cut back completely. This competition, we believe, will give the market a welcome incentive at the time it most needs TRADA's support.'

All projects should last no more than one year and are to be undertaken as a collaborative venture between the member company and TRADA Technology.  The winners are expected to commit their own resources to the project, to a value at least equivalent to TRADA's contribution. This will be a maximum of £25,000 per individual project.

Each project will be expected to deliver some generic output which, Mr Abbott added, ‘furthers the appropriate use of timber in construction, and as such can demonstrate a clear benefit to the general membership or wider timber industry. It should also be innovative in its use of timber or timber products'. Deadline for entries is Friday 14th November 2008.
