Which timbers are suitable for timber flooring?
The choice of species of timber for flooring is largely based on the acceptability of the appearance of the wood, and the degree of wear resistance required. For example a pine floor may be suitable for domestic applications, it may wear excessively under heavy traffic such as in the corridor of a school, where a denser timber may be more appropriate. With regard to movement in service, small to medium movement timbers are recommended.
BS 8201 lists the timber species that are suitable for use in various applications, although it should be noted that some of these species are no longer available, as the Standard dates back to 1987. However, it should be relatively easy to find alternative timbers with similar properties that can be used in their place.
