Are there any Health and Safety regulations for the gap size between boards?
We recommend that these gaps are 8mm or more, depending on the board profile and moisture content. If these gaps are any less, the boards may not shed water efficiently and, as a result, could be come slippery. However, gaps of this size may become an issue, particularly with regard to the safety of uses of the deck with stiletto heels, but there is no regulation dealing with this specifically.
Further information can be found in our Timber Decking Manual, 2nd Edition, a comprehensive guide to the design and specification of timber decking.
